2023 Cyclocross Crusade – Series Race #3 & 4
Cascade Locks, Oregon
Port of Cascade Locks (located at the disc golf course)
October 28 & October 29, 2023

Event sanctioned by Oregon Bicycle Racing Association
USAC points for all categories will be on Day 1 of Cascade Locks!
Although this is still an OBRA sanctioned race, our friends at USA Cycling (USAC) have offered to allow all the categories in this race to be scored in their national ranking system, thus, racers may improve their start position at 2023 USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships in Louisville, KY and other USAC sanctioned races. Racers will already have an annual USAC license to accrue points at Cyclocross Crusade Series Race #3.

Belgian Day at PIR Infield was a blast! The Belgian TV crew was truly impressed by the caliber and size of our fields and the spirit of our event. The Series continues this weekend in Cascade Locks with races 3 and 4. This is the course that has shattered dreams of glory for many a podium contender with its mud, its epic run up, and a sand section that exposes a racer’s true skill level. The Gods of the Gorge never fail to make their presence known with outbursts of wind, rain, lightning and thunder but may they smile on us one more time this season.

SATURDAY:

Team Competition Day!

USAC Points Day!

SUNDAY:

Sunday’s race day is costume day!
If you wish to participate by wearing a costume while you race, you will be entered into the costume competition! A costume is not required to race. This is just something to do for fun, and is an annual tradition. Reminder, this is a family event! Use discretion when choosing your costumes!

Sunday is race number 5 in the OBRA Junior Cyclocross Series!
Not only will we be scoring for crusade overall, we will also be scoring  the following: 9-12 Cat 3/4/5, 13-14 cat 3/4/5, 15-16 Cat 3/4/5, 17-18 Cat 3/4/5, Elite Juniors 1/2/3

You can find all the weekend details on our website https://crosscrusade.com/schedule/
Please note: NO FIRES ALLOWED, this includes open flame propane.
Camping at the venue is full. Check the KOA campground down the road or the campground at the Port of Cascade Locks near Thunder Island for other options.

2023 Cyclocross Crusade – Series Race #2
PIR Infield / Pro Paddock @ Portland International Raceway
October 22, 2023

Event sanctioned by Oregon Bicycle Racing Association

The 30th Anniversary Cyclocross Crusade Season is underway with a great day at PIR Heron Lakes. This coming weekend we return to the PIR INFIELD and the National Championships Course.

WHO’S WINNING?

The competition was intense—check out the battle results and find your favorite to cheer on (or heckle) for the rest of the series. The day began muddy and slick but by the Women’s races conditions were just good enough for the tough to ride all of Berner Hill. Take note you 50/60/70+ riders who ran through the Pain Cave!

TAKE THE CAKE!

The Team Competition began with a 30th birthday cake competition. Most teams had devoured their cakes by the time the Judges arrived, so it came down to two:  Bicycle Attorney and Rolling Thunder p/b The Missing Link. While the Attorneys led in presentation of evidence and argument, the Rolling Thunder team won with a play to emotion and sympathy, and a fifth of Jamison.

This week’s Team Competition: Arts and Crafts… What did you make in kindergarten? Can you improve on it? And what does it say about 30 years of mud, sweat and one or more gears??? LETS SEE HOW CREATIVE a ‘cross team can be.

HI MOM!

We are going to be on TV!!! A Belgian TV crew will be on site to document one of our Belgian racers not named Sven.  Bring your Belgian Flags and Belgian CX Racer supporter gear! Better yet, buy a Belgian Beast Big Bobble Hat on Sunday!  NOTE: if you bring a Flanders Lion Flag it MUST HAVE A RED TONGUE AND CLAWS. All black lions will be removed.

BEER!

Like a certain supreme court justice, WE LIKE BEER  We know there are lots of teams with hook-ups for beer. With respect to PIR, and our hard-earned sponsorships, please support our sponsor Hopworks Brewery this weekend by purchasing beer at their tent – which will be located conveniently near yours!

GRAIL!

The Grail Hunt is on! Twelve Relics (EACH worth a 2024 season’s pass) and the GRAIL (worth a stipend to go to Worlds) are waiting to be found.  The collage letters map is the correct map for this year’s hunt. Ride in any direction, all or in part and look for an orange “X” painted on the pavement. Relics will be within 100 Meters of the “X” on public property. Priddles ( ancient riddles in poem form ) will be issued each week as clues to the rumored hiding places. INFO on the website.

2023 Cyclocross Crusade Race Number/Timing Chip Pick-up Event! Saturday 10/7/23

Greetings cyclocross racers,

The 2023 Cyclocross Crusade race series is using a chip timing system to score races again this season. The chips are attached to the race numbers.

Our numbers are specific to Cyclocross Crusade, so your numbers from other races will not work.  In order to make your Crusade race day less stressful, we HIGHLY recommend picking up your race number/chip at Hopworks to avoid standing in a long line on race day.

It is also important to note, that if you race more than one race, you will need a number for each category (the numbers/chips are category specific).

So come on over to Hopworks on Powell Blvd and pick up your number(s), get some food  if you’re hungry, have a beverage, or just hang out with other racers and discuss tire pressure! We’ll be there from 3:00-5:00pm and we look forward to seeing you!

Please also remember to bring your OBRA membership card with you

This is officially the final year we will be racing at this venue!

We will be honoring our friend and long time Cyclocross Crusade race announcer Luciano Bailey on Sunday so we really hope you can join us.
At 12:10, in place of one of the course previews, we will be riding a memorial lap for Luciano.
It will be a modified course lap, so riders of all ages will be able to participate.
Also, as many of you know, Luciano loved the “Hillclimb Challenge” on the big run-up before the finish line.
The competition is the racer who can make it the farthest up the hill without having to dismount wins.
This Sunday, there will be a prize for the racer who can ride all the way to the top!

2022 Cyclocross Crusade Race Number/Timing Chip Pick-up Event!

September 29, 2022

Greetings cyclocross racers,

This year the Cyclocross Crusade race series is using a chip timing system to score races. The chips are attached to the race numbers.
If you raced at JubelX in Bend, you already have your number for Cyclocross Crusade.

If you do not have a number yet, and in order to make your race day less stressful, we highly recommend picking up your race number/chip this Sunday at Hopworks to avoid standing in a long line on race day.

It is also important to note, that if you race more then one race, you will need a number for each category (the numbers/chips are category specific).

So come on over to Hopworks on Powell Blvd and pick up your number(s), have some lunch if you’re hungry, have a beverage, or just hang out with other racers and discuss tire pressure!
We’ll be there from 1:00-3:00pm and we look forward to seeing you!

Sunday October 2, 2022
1:00 – 3:00 pm

Statement from Cyclocross Crusade regarding Code of Conduct violation at Rainier Race

To the members of our community:

Many of you have seen photos or heard that a cyclocross racer at Rainier High School raced in a T-shirt that had a symbol of hate written on it. This went unnoticed at the race and was not brought to the attention of the staff or officials until photos of the racer and the T-shirt surfaced this week. If it had been noticed at the race, action would have been taken immediately, as this is a clear violation of not only the Cyclocross Crusade Code of Conduct but the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association (OBRA) Code of Conduct, the governing body of our 2021 race series.
This is a very serious matter, and this type of violation will not be tolerated.

While many people in the community feel that action was not taken soon enough, to be fair OBRA conducted an investigation to confirm the facts before reacting. OBRA is a small organization with a dedicated volunteer board of directors and a hard-working, part-time staff, so this took some time.

Our website clearly states that failure to adhere to the Cyclocross Crusade Code of Conduct may result in expulsion and future exclusion from Cyclocross Crusade events and activities. We have contacted the racer to let them know that this type of violation will not be tolerated and the consequences therein.

The Cyclocross Crusade Code of Conduct is set out to provide a safe and accepting environment for all peoples to enjoy the sport of cyclocross. We expect all participants, spectators, officials, staff, sponsors and other people associated with any Cyclocross Crusade event or activity to adhere to this code of conduct as a principle of being a steward of the sport and spirit of cyclocross.

Cyclocross Crusade 2020 Season Announcement

It is with a heavy heart, but a clear conscience, that we must make this announcement canceling the 2020 Cyclocross Crusade season. After much discussion and a lot of ideas thrown around, we have come to the conclusion that we can not host an event during this pandemic that lives up to our standards, is safe and accessible to everyone, is safe for the communities that host us and embodies what cyclocross means to us and our community. While we know this is going to be a disappointment to many, ourselves included, we know that this is the right decision. We will miss seeing the mud on your smiling faces.

Be well and stay safe,

The Cyclocross Crusade Crew

2019 Cyclocross Crusade – Heron Lakes – Race 4
Portland International Raceway
October 20, 2019

Race #4 takes us to Heron Lakes at Portland International Raceway in Portland!

Team Competition
Cyclocross Watercolor!
Artists have long painted outdoors, but how many artists have painted en plein air at a cyclocross race? Rick Potestio, our resident artist and founder of the Cyclocross Crusade, will have his studio set up on-site. Come paint alongside a great, or set up your own studio space at your team tent. Although the traditional and well-established method of painting en plein air incorporates the use of oil paint, watercolor is the medium of choice at Heron Lakes. There is no water on-site (unless it rains!) so please plan your art supplies accordingly! Bring your entries to the Cyclocross Crusade tent in the expo by 2:00 for judging. Be sure you include a label with your team name for easy identification. Winner will be announced at 4:15 at the Crusade tent.

IMPORTANT VENUE NOTES:
PARKING: located on the North side of Broadacre Rd (off N. Expo Rd.)
Please only park where the parking attendants direct you to park.
Get your team on the list (email info@crosscrusade.com) for tent setup and for one car to be allowed inside the venue by 8:00 am Sunday. After 8:00 am on Sunday – – no vehicles will be allowed inside.
Once inside the venue, any cars parked inside will not be able to leave until after the last race of the day is over.
There will be a loading zone near the venue gate for gear drop off/pick ups.

There have been A LOT of car break-ins at PIR over the years….
PLEASE do not leave valuables in your vehicle. Also, if you see anything suspicious, please alert the Cyclocross Crusade crew or an OBRA official immediately.

TEAM TENT SET-UP will be on Saturday starting at 4:00 PM
(Sponsors only may Set-up at 1:30pm) Please weigh down and/or stake your tents. All Tents and vehicles should be 3 feet away from the course.

2019 Cyclocross Crusade Alpenrose Dairy Race #1 & #2
October 5th & 6th
Portland, Oregon

Alpenrose Dairy is a very special place. We have been racing cyclocross at Alpenrose Dairy for 22 years!
Legends have raced here: John Leonard, Wendy Williams, Sue Butler, Shannon Skerritt, Erik Tonkin, Rhonda Mazza, Ann Knapp, Clara Honsinger, Daniele Pontoni and Rick Potestio just to name a few!
We are eternally grateful to the Alpenrose Dairy family for their generosity over the years.

We would like to invite teams that have flags to fly them on the flag poles around the velodrome this weekend.

This season’s schedule includes two nationally sanctioned races, placing us on the USA Cycling – American Cyclocross Calendar (ACXC). This will allow USA Cycling License holders to earn points in the USA Cycling (USAC) national ranking system, which is used to calculate call-up spots for those interested in racing at the USA Cycling National Championships in Tacoma, WA in December. The ACXC races are Alpenrose Dairy Day 1 and Day 2!

In order to encourage participation in these USA Cycling sanctioned events, The Cyclocross Crusade will cover the cost of all one-day licenses required for participation in these USAC sanctioned events. Any rider wishing to earn USA Cycling Results and Rankings points (particularly those interested in racing the Cyclocross National Championships) will need to purchase an annual license from USAC in order to be eligible to earn these points.

What this means for you: You will register as you normally do for any other Cyclocross Crusade race. If you have a USA Cycling License, please show it when you check in at the race. If you do not, you will need to fill out a one-day USA Cycling license form when you check in at the race.

ALL RIDERS MUST CHECK IN at registration (even if you are pre-registered) and either fill out the USAC one day/waiver form or fill out the standard USAC waiver along with showing us their USAC annual license

If you have an USAC annual license (or purchase one onsite), your results will count towards your USAC national ranking. In order for us to have the highest ranked fields possible for all of our participants, it is important that you get us your annual license number if you have one, even if you don’t care about your national ranking

All participants are expected to follow all USA Cycling rules, the USA Cycling Code of Conduct, and the Cyclocross Crusade Code of Conduct.

Here’s some important information to help you plan your weekend:

PRE-REGISTRATION AND RACE NUMBER PICK-UP
Friday evening, October 4th at Breadwinner Cycles
2323 N Williams Portland, OR 97227
7-9pm

If you plan to pre-reg online, please do so by Thursday, Oct. 3rd — save time on race day and pre-register!

– RACE DAY SCHEDULE is posted for categories, start times and course breaks at the venue and on our website
– COURSE PREVIEW The course will be open for preview Friday between 3pm – 5:30pm. FIRST AID is provided on race days only–not during the friday pre-ride. Participate at your own risk. Please visit our website for the course map.
– KID’S KROSS presented by Speedvagen is back! You can find more info, including the schedule on our website crosscrusade.com/kids-cross
– PODIUM CEREMONY (ACXC weekend only) We will be awarding the top three racers in each ACXC category on Saturday and Sunday. Podium times each day are 12:20 and 4:15. Must be present to receive prize. Junior racers will receive medals by category only (elite 1/2, 3/4/5).
– NO ALCOHOL PLEASE be respectful.
– TEAM TENTS will be allowed to set up early on Friday between 3pm – 5:30pm. All tents and vehicles must be 3 feet away from the course. If you can’t make it out on Friday, you are welcome to set up throughout the weekend.
– OVERNIGHT CAMPING will be allowed (in a designated area) email info@crosscrusade.com to get on the reservation list.
– PARKING ATTENDANTS will be working the weekend. Please obey their directions and say really nice things to them. Parking will be tight; carpooling or riding bikes to the venue is highly encouraged. NO parking in truck zones!
– RESPECT the neighbors. Warm up- but don’t block up traffic in the neighboring streets. This means even you 60+ racers! Please, show extra courtesy–make room for cars to pass (especially on SW Illinois St. and the truck entrance to the dairy).
– NO BIKE RIDING in production area entrance by the intersection of SW Illinois & Shattuck. No riding on the ball fields!
– BIKE WASH sponsored by Bivo! They will be orchestrating a head to head bike wash competition. Do you think you can out-wash your buddy when up against the clock?
– FOOD We have a fantastic line-up of food vendors: Mr. Taco, 3 Guys Grilling and Bob’s Red Mill. We will have Red Bull on-site to help keep you energized both days, and Nuun to help you hydrate.

The Art of Cyclocross:

This year’s poster, a Rick Potestio original, celebrates the beautiful sport of cyclocross. We continue the team competitions this season with this theme – The Art of Cyclocross!

Cyclocross Course Side Art

We want to see how creative your team can be by creating an original art installation and displaying it at your team tent, or carefully placing it along the course. Be sure to put a plaque on the art so we know which team to score. If your art is course-side, please alert one of the crew members as to the location, so it is not missed during the judging.

You may place your art during the team tent set-up on Friday from 3-5:30pm or day of race. Please do not impede any part of the race course, be respectful of the competitive racing this weekend and don’t place anything that may endanger any racers.

Judging will finish on Sunday, Oct. 6th at 2pm and the winning team will be announced at 4:15 at the top of the velodrome behind the bleachers. Win the Coveted Prize– the Alpenrose Dairy Venue Flag!

FUN. Last but most importantly….HAVE FUN!

HUGE THANK YOU to ALL our sponsors!

This race could not happen without them- Please remember them with your business throughout the year!

July 2018

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Oregon — (July 2018)
The River City Bicycles Cyclocross Crusade is celebrating its 25th season!

Twenty-five years ago in Portland, fewer than 60 cycling enthusiasts toed the line to compete in an obscure race called cyclocross. In 2017, over 950 competitors of all ages raced in Bend, Oregon on the grounds of our sponsor, Deschutes Brewery.

The River City Bicycles Cyclocross Crusade is one of the oldest continuous cyclocross race series, and has the largest participant field of any cyclocross bike race in North America. More significantly, it has the largest women’s daily participation of any cyclocross race. Both men and women race the same course and compete for equal prize money. The race courses are designed to foster fierce competition in the junior and elite fields – giving them invaluable experience and preparing them to compete with the best in the country and the world. The 2018 Cyclocross Crusade season will have eight races on six unique venues, and will host the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association Cyclocross Championships. This season’s schedule includes two nationally sanctioned races, placing it on the USA Cycling -American Cyclocross Calendar (ACXC).

The sport of cyclocross incorporates a lot of running, and to celebrate this, the Cyclocross Crusade calendar includes three cross-country style running races held in conjunction with the bike races. The schedule is as follows:
