Imagine my delight as i sit back in the staging area grumbling that my best position  has been 3rd from last when i get a call up.  Yea! a mid pack start on what i already know is a great course (i raced the C's earlier). As i make my way to the line the rider in front of me slows.I'm only going about 3mph and as i start around him i feel and hear a crack in my leg and go down in a heap. I have no idea what happened.  If you saw this or were the other rider please help me out. I've played it over dozens of times in my head and can't get an answer. I have two broken bones, 8 screws and two metal plates in my leg. And worst of all i'm going to miss the last 3 races of the season. I'm sure it was an freak accident But unless someone saw Tanya Harding lurking around the start with a pipe I'm clueless.  Help me out if you can..
I also apologize to the rest of the racer. I saw your times and know you only got 30+ minutes on a great course.

I was waiting to the far right side of the start area near the first numbered start group when many of us heard a snap. I thought by the noise that two riders had tangled and thought that it sounded like someone had missed a clip. But we immediately saw someone down and knew it must be bad. To my knowledge, the rider which was next to you had no idea what happened other than hearing the noise in your leg. I wish you a speedy recovery. Stay positive and stay with the physical therapy and you will be back soon.

did you hit a rock?  not take your calcium pills?  Dude that really sucks.  It always sucks to get hurt...it really sucks when you don't know why.  I have been there!  Good luck, heal well, and carry a small picture of the injury with you at airports for when you set off metal detectors.

I have a friend who lost most of his knee in Afghanistan and has a lot of metal in there now...every time he flies he has to pull the xray out.

Good luck and see you next season man!!

I did notice an unusual looking, umbrella-covered out of place crosser just
opposite the start in an area I would described as a "grassy knoll" by the
blackberry bushes. He seemed to be placing a large object around a tire
tube...sling shot style. Seemed odd.    When I turned back (from hearing the
commotion at the start) he was gone, save a half eaten waffle.
Get well soon.

I was near you when you went down...no idea what happened.
You obviously had surgery...did your orthopedist comment on what the bone looked like?   Fractures that occur with little/unclear trauma are always a little concerning.  I am not an orthopod, but do know medicine well.  Feel free to contact me off this form if you desire.  rettmann@hotmail.com

Kicker there was clear trauma .  enough to break the fibula bone and tear the ligaments around the ankle. I thought the other rider must have stepped on it as he was falling over as i was still upright when it was broken.

Now that i hear he rode away oblivious to it all i'm more confused than ever.

Beware the "grassy knoll"

Red Stripe you were responsible for the only chuckle i had all day. Thanks

Thanks to all for you emails and tips on what happened.  I still haven't heard from the other rider but i think i have i figured out.  As i was passing he  stepped on it.  The rear tire lost traction and slipped, sliding sideways toward me. As he stepped on it again breaking traction the pedal shaft made contact with my leg just above the ankle breaking the bone and dislocating the ankle toward the frame. Since the pedal (hard) made contact with my leg (soft) he didn't even feel an impact.   Really just a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.. I'm working on a better story to tell my friends. It will probably involve Dick Cheney and his band of thugs trying to clear some space in his age group.
