It is just me or is there starting to be a negative vibe with cross crusade?
Maybe it is just a victim of its own success, but it seems like there are more
complaints about field sizes, starting, poor sportsmanship, etc. Maybe there
is just too big a crowd for a pleasant racing atmosphere.

More riders, more smack, more whining... it's a math thing.

I didn't put this in the 'SMACK PAGE', it just came up here. Your comment
illustrates the problem. A bunch of losers with crappy attitudes are pretty
much ruining the fun in the cross racing scene. This will take care of itself,
as less and less people will turn out for this because of a-holes like
yourself.

Hey old guy... while you didn't *mean* to put it in the smack page, your post ended up here. You don't get mercy in the smack talk area, sorry. Total bugger I know.

Here's the thing... everybody who is cool also happens to be fast. So if you are slow you are stuck with all the riff raff. So you get their bad attitude, bad sportsmanship AND... if this doesn't take the cake, you're stuck behind a bunch of them because they keep falling over.

Meanwhile, at the front, it's a party with music and girls, smooth lines and big air. We rock the house and when a little bumping and crashing happens, nobody's bothered 'cause we're so damn stoked to be so young, good looking and fast.

I see that you've posted a total of TWO entries here on this fine forum in your life. So the whining and negative vibe is within yourself my brotha. There is no negative vibe at the crusade, it's cross. A few people do dumb things in their state of oxygen debt but that's finding the one bad apple in a sh**load of delicious apple pie.

Even though this is smackLand and I *really* shouldn't do this but, here's some advice: On Saturday, dial your bike so it's in perfect running order, get a good night's sleep, drink lots of fluid and dream of winning. Then, wake up with plenty of time, eat some solid protein like eggs & such with > 3 hours before race time. Get to the venue early and get checked in. Then do a pre ride when you can and look for the good lines. Get yourself in a good position before the start and think about having a good race. With ~10 minutes to the start, eat you favorite flavored GU or gel. I go for the espresso double caffeine shot. When the start happens, lay down some power and go fast. If you are stuck behind people, use that time to recover. Ride like you mean it and don't take any crap. Enjoy the race & be cool. People will be cool back. If someone decides not to be cool then your ONLY goal is to stay in front of that [expletive] dude. But generally that won't happen because this is cross. A few bumps and clinks are normal so don't ride jaded misinterpreting someone else's sloppy line as an intentional slight. Just roll with the flow and enjoy the suffering. Another good idea is to position yourself where you can avoid issues. Don't ride beside someone on a slick off camber side slope so when their tire washes they take you out, ride smart & keep it smooth... stay out of trouble. Good luck out there

grazhopper,if you stayed by the roots for the a race, thankyou!  i never would have found the 'good line' without you, and your cheering was unmatched and much appreciated for the entire race,      you flippin rock!

its awful gentle-like for smack talk central, but i gotta say it:

20 years since my first cross race, and 8 years since my last before this season, and a bunch of time in between hanging out watching races, racing races, and hanging out with crossers here in portland, and down in sf and santa cruz, and i can honestly say that to me, the vibe if as friendly and fun as it has ever been.

i gotta agree with zaphod - it may seem worse because as the huge delicious apple pie that is cross gets bigger, that one off patch seems larger - but beyond that, its all good. ive got people i dont know from adam cheering me on out there, and im blowing chunks. thats pretty damn sweet.

The 'tude only sux in here because we, I mean people, can say whatever they want and be anonymous. Once out in reality people tend to be nice when face to face with each other.

Basically the vibe at the races rocks. So have no fear Old&Slow dude.

It's not the racing, it's the internet.

great race day advice, zaphod. when i'm racing there's lot's of calling out, laughing, back slapping, bumping and elbows, and even some apologies. in smack talk it's a different story but some times some issues get brought up and sometimes resolved. bring it on, open dialog never killed anyone. or did it?
